Child Safety Features on Window Treatments

Introduction

There are many safety issues involved with the use of window treatments. In fact, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that nearly 600 children in the U.S. each year receive emergency room treatment for “injuries related to window blinds, shades and cords”. There are several ways to reduce or eliminate these accidents from occurring in your home, including choosing cordless options and installing child safety devices on any remaining cords that you do use.

Cordless lifts and continuous cord loops for the win.

Cordless lifts are safer than corded lifts. If you’re looking for a window treatment that will keep your little ones safe, there are some features you can find on all types of window treatments to ensure the safety of your family. One such feature is a cordless lift rather than a pull cord. Corded window treatments use cord condensers to hold the lift cords in place, but these can be easily broken by small fingers or even caught in clothing.

Continuous cord loops are also preferable over pull cords because they’re less likely to get tangled up or caught on something as you raise and lower your shades or blinds due to the tensioner device that gets installed. When installed per Window Covering Safety Council standards (maximum of 6” of distance in the loop) continuous cord loops do not pose the same hazard as pull cords when children are left unsupervised with them.

Motorized window treatments make life safer for everyone.

Window treatments that have a motorized lift system are much safer than manually operated window treatment products. Motorized window treatments operate with a remote control or mobile device app, making them easy to use without having to worry about tripping over any cords. Best of all, the window treatments can be operated without any need to be touched at all! This makes them perfect for homes with small children who might be tempted by cords lying around on the ground due to failure to install safety devices such as cord cleats.

For small children and pets, even tilt cords, for example, can be similar to a window blind cord. The same can be said of manual shades and Venetian blinds that don’t have any type of safety mechanism built into them. Motorized window treatments can operate the tilt or lift on blinds and shades eliminating dangling cords.

Cordless window treatments are available in almost any style and material.

Cordless window treatments come in a wide variety of styles, including:

  • Roman shades
  • Roller shades
  • Shutters
  • Drapery Panels
  • Cellular Shades
  • Sheer Shades
  • Natural Woven Shades

Conclusion

You don’t have to give up style to have a child safe window treatment! Cordless lift is one of the most aesthetically pleasing looks due to no cords showing or being exposed in the window. Motorized or automated window treatments are an excellent choice because they ensure that any child or pet within reach of your blinds or shades won’t have any chance of interacting with any dangling cords. Cordless shades are available in almost any window treatment style which insures safety for your children while also giving you the style you want.

Budget Blinds Delays, Backorders & Expected Lead Times

Like many of the world’s suppliers, the custom window treatment industry is experiencing unprecedented delays and extended backorders. These delays may affect orders we place for your custom window treatments. Pre-COVID, most window treatments could be ordered, manufactured, shipped and received in approximately 3 – 4 weeks. In fact, some products, depending on location of manufacture, could arrive in as little as 10 days. But our world has changed and we are now experiencing lead times of 5 – 6 weeks and up to 12 for some specialty-shaped products. Global supply chain, labor, and logistic constraints continue to impact operations.

There is hope! Budget Blinds is the largest custom window treatment provider in North America, which means we have the widest selection of products from the highest number of manufacturers. This includes Hunter Douglas, Lutron, Norman Window Fashions, Enlightened Style and many more. This allows our design consultants to recommend not only the best products at the best price, but also take ship times into consideration. In other words, we can customize a solution for your home or business based on your needs and the ever-changing global situation we are faced with. If one manufacturer has a known delay, we can switch to a different one that may be shipping on time. Choices are something we can control. But there are many things we cannot.

Trucking/Shipping

Some lead times are unpredictable and shipment delays have become common. Orders may not be shipped strictly by date but based on what fits into the available aircraft or truck. Large orders may wait longer than small ones. Long packages may wait longer than short ones. Just because a shipment is not moving does not mean it is lost. It is just waiting for space to become available. There is no way for us to know if a package that has been custom-crafted for your home is waiting on a truck for a driver or fuel, in order to complete its journey to Colorado Springs.

Just one example of communication from one of our most reputable manufacturers follows:

“We are experiencing increasing delays with shipments. We wanted to let you know what is happening and what this means for our service to you.

First, there is not enough air freight capacity internationally. DHL advised us their volume is up 78% over last year. FedEx told us shipping volumes are at the level they expected in 2026. UPS is in the same situation. DHL is adding planes, but currently we see delays with shipments waiting to get on planes.

Second, US domestic delivery is also a problem. DHL cannot recruit enough staff in their hub at Cincinnati and are now having to divert full planes into Chicago, Los Angeles, and Miami to clear customs there. When shipments are cleared, they are sitting waiting for domestic flights and when they get to local service centers, they are sitting waiting for trucks and drivers.”

Freight costs are increasing. After delaying as long as possible, the custom window treatment manufacturers raised their costs on shipping to us. We have chosen to absorb as much as we can, but the freight companies are changing requirements and costs continue to increase. For example, freight companies have drastically reduced the maximum ship length (such as a very wide shade) before oversize ship charges are incurred. Some manufacturers are choosing to respond to this by cancelling the option for wider window treatments.

Supply Chain

Our suppliers more frequently suffering recurring stock-outs on critical parts. This has created an increase in extended backorders and even full production stops on some products. We have discovered that many times this is the result of small things (e.g. paint availability or chips for automated wifi hubs). We have no forecast on when this could change, we can only respond to the information provided. Sometimes we have been informed of the stock out the very day your product is supposed to ship. We know that our manufacturing partners are doing everything they can to avoid this. That said, since we have such a wide variety of manufacturers and products to choose from, if one product is experiencing extended backorders, we can normally suggest an equivalent product that is not.

Labor

Additionally, there have been labor challenges across many industries. Manufacturers can only respond to increased demand by hiring more employees, and those workers are in short supply. (The port situation in Los Angeles is just one example of how dramatically the labor shortage can affect business everywhere in the US.) We’ve all seen schools close classes, restaurants close their dining rooms, and more, all due to staffing shortages. Even our small business here in Colorado Springs is not immune. Although our dedicated team works very hard to provide you the best in customer service every day, the labor situation has put us in a position where we have been chronically short-staffed for 18 months or more.

Lead Times

We used to provide expected time to install for everything we ordered. Now though, we have seen lead times go from 3 weeks to upwards of 12-15. When we provide an estimated arrival time for your window treatments, we are only doing our best guess based on a variety of moving targets and information we have at that time. We have asked our Design Consultants to no longer provide best guesses since we don’t want to disappoint when your window treatments are delayed by even a few days. We do not like communicating bad news any more than you want to receive it! Please remember, the products you get from us don’t exist until we order them for your windows. They are truly custom and 99% of what we do is not in stock, but rather, has to be made from scratch, like a custom piece of furniture.

We Look Forward to Serving You

We are doing our best to present to you solutions that we can have manufactured and ultimately installed in your home in approximately 4 to 6 weeks. We frequently can beat that timeline, but we occasionally miss it due to a combination of factors. We do sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

As a locally owned and operated business, we take pride in providing a premium experience to our El Paso and Teller County neighbors. We are the best reviewed custom window treatment company in the entire Pikes Peak Region, we have been voted Best Employer and Best of the Springs years in a row. We deeply regret any unexpected delays or issues. We don’t know of anything else that we, or our team could have done to make this any better. Every day the situation seems to be changing and we have been told different things by different suppliers, so we can only communicate to you what we know. This has all been a truly unusual and difficult situation to manage.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for putting your trust in Budget Blinds of Greater Colorado Springs to fulfill your custom window treatment needs. We will continue to strive to give you our best every single day. One day we will settle into a new normal. In the meantime we daily continue to provide the best in custom blinds, shades, shutters and drapery for your homes and businesses.

Budget Blinds Level Orange/High Risk Protocol

To: All Budget Blinds of Greater Colorado Springs Customers
Date: 01/05/2021
RE: Level Orange/High Risk Protocols

Today, in encouraging news, El Paso County moved from Level Red/Severe Risk on the COVID-19 Dial back down to Level Orange/High Risk. As we continue to be vigilant with all State and Local regulations related to COVID-19, we want to communicate how we will manage interaction with you, our valuable customers.

Are You Still Open for In-Home Consultations and/or Installations?

Yes, with restrictions. Our Orange-Level/High Risk protocol is strictly no touch, social distancing, masks, and routine disinfecting. This is on-site at our office as well as when we visit your home or workplace. As long as the spread of COVID-19 remains a threat, we will be vigilant in managing your safety, the safety of our employees and of those who serve us.

We ask you to guarantee the following conditions so we can operate under State mandates for business as we interact you for installations and consultations:

  1. No one in the home is manifesting symptoms of COVID.
  2. No one in the home is currently quarantining for any COVID-related reason (including waiting for test results).
  3. No one in the home has tested positive for COVID in the previous 14 days.

If any these conditions do exist, we will reschedule your appointment.

Can You Provide Your Services Virtually?

Yes, we offer virtual consultations in lieu of in-home consultations (via Zoom, FaceTime, Duo, etc.). Your home is unique, and since every window treatment is custom-made, we know that one size does not fit all. Throughout 2020 we were able to proceed with consultations without requiring a visit to the home. We may then schedule a final measurement after you have selected window treatments, colors, etc. We can also ship sample swatches directly to your home or drop off sample books. Schedule your time with us, and we will walk you through all options.

Can I Visit You in the Showroom?

Yes. Per State mandates, we can now allow a limited number of people in the building. We strongly encourage customers to schedule a time to transact business in the showroom and we will stagger appointment times. Scheduling an appointment will insure we can accommodate serving you. Additionally, you will be asked to voluntarily sign-in when you arrive to support contact tracing if necessary. Simply call us at 719-301-7171 and we will accommodate your schedule with ours.

What Steps Have You Taken to Ensure Your Customers’ and Employee’s Safety?

We have continually complied with all recommended CDC protocols and are adhering to all State and local mandates as it relates to COVID-19. You can read more about what we are doing to protect our customers and employees here. Additionally, you can review our previously published protocols on Level Red/Severe Risk Protocols.

We truly appreciate your business and support and look forward to serving you. Should you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Budget Blinds Level Red/Severe Risk Protocol

To: All Budget Blinds of Greater Colorado Springs Customers
Date: 11/29/2020
RE: Level Red/Severe Risk Protocols

On Friday the 27th, El Paso County moved to Level Red/Severe Risk on the COVID-19 Dial. As we’ve navigated this tumultuous year, Dina and I want to thank you, our faithful and valuable customers, for inviting us into your homes and allowing us to serve you and your custom window treatment needs. Here are some important things we would like to communicate as we navigate this latest State and local mandate:

Are You Still Open for In-Home Consultations and/or Installations?

Yes, with restrictions. Our Red-Level/Severe Risk protocol is strictly no touch, social distancing, masks and gloves, and routine disinfecting. This is on-site at our office as well as when we visit your home or workplace. As long as the spread of COVID-19 remains a threat, we will be vigilant in managing your safety, the safety of our employees and of those who serve us.

If you can guarantee the following controlled environment, we can proceed with installations or in-home consultations:

  1. Customer presence in the home is limited to 1-2 persons
  2. No one in the home is manifesting symptoms of COVID
  3. No one in the home is currently quarantining for any COVID-related reason (including waiting for test results)
  4. No one in the home has tested positive for COVID in the previous 14 days

If any of these conditions do exist, we can easily reschedule your appointment. We are required to follow State and local mandates related to your safety and the safety of our staff. Therefore, to limit contact during the time we will be in your home we require that individuals move to a secure location we will not be working in, or not be in the home at all.

We understand that with winter weather, work-at-home requirements and possibly even home schooling, you have a lot to manage and this is a difficult situation for all. We have had customers allow our highly-skilled staff in their homes and then leave the area where we will be working so we can do our measurements, etc. Others have sequestered in a separate area of the home. Customers have allowed us access for final measurements or even installations via lock box when they are not on premises. The bottom line is, we respect you and your home or office, and are working hard during Level Red/Severe Risk, to follow State and local mandates and maintain a safe work environment.

Can You Provide Your Services Virtually?

Yes, we offer virtual consultations in lieu of in-home consultations (via Zoom, FaceTime, Duo, etc.). Throughout the year, these virtual consultations have been successful in helping our customers get their projects started under COVID restrictions. Your home is unique, and since every window treatment is custom-made, we know that one size does not fit all. As with our previous Stay at Home orders, in some situations, we have been able to proceed without ever requiring a visit in the home. Other times, we will schedule a final measurement after you have selected window treatments, colors, etc. We can even ship sample swatches directly to your home or drop off sample books. Schedule your time with us, and we will walk you through all options.

Can I Visit You in the Showroom?

Yes, but restricted. Per State mandates, we can only allow a limited number of people in the building at any given time. If we exceed those levels we have to restrict access. Therefore we strongly encourage customers to schedule a time to transact business in the showroom and we will stagger appointment times. Whether reviewing final samples, stopping by to pick up temp shades for your home, or handling payment or financing, we are here for you. We do discourage walk-up business in the showroom due to the number-of-people restrictions.

As previously published, we have continually complied with all recommended CDC protocols and are adhering to all State and local mandates as it relates to COVID-19. You can read more about what we are doing to protect our customers and employees here.

We truly appreciate your business and support and look forward to serving you. Should you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We’re in this together. #DoingMyPartCO
